Jesus Christ and the Fulfillment of the Law

He was born under the Law and, as a human being, lived a perfect life; he kept the law and, by doing so was able to break through the great barrier it represented. He became the perfect, spotless sacrifice on our behalf. (1 Timothy 2:5, Acts 4:12).

The Last Adam

Scripture calls him the last Adam. (1 Corinthians 15:45). The first Adam brought death, and the last Adam brought life. By laying down his perfect life, he is able to offer eternal life to all who trust in him. He is the only one who can do this – there will be no more Adams: we either die with the first Adam or live with the last Adam. He is the “way, the truth and the life”. (John 14:6).

The Covenant of Grace

Christ opened the new age of the “Covenant of Grace.” Mankind has two representatives, the first Adam and the last Adam, and they represent two alternatives, sin and death or pardon and eternal life to which there are two responses: doubt or faith. The choice is ours which to follow, either to believe God’s Word or to doubt it.

Christ offers the only alternative to the death which sin produces and the Law endorses. God offers mercy to all who have faith in Christ. The choice is to either trust in ourselves and our own inadequate efforts, which are dismally hopeless, or trust in God’s perfect substitute, who took our judgment for us, died for us, came alive for us, and ascended to heaven for us. (Isaiah 64:6, Galatians 2:16).

Judgement and Redemption

All the previous ages ended in judgment, but Jesus took all the judgment on himself. (Isaiah 53:4-5). I believe that if he had not died on the cross at that time in history, judgment would have fallen upon the world. The history of mankind is one long, sordid story of violence, murder, corruption, greed, immorality and all the other broken laws of God, and judgment was inevitable, but Jesus flung himself into the gap and the world was spared at that time.

It is at the cross that good and evil was judged. It is at the cross where judgment fell. The tree that brought death became the tree of life. It was on the cross that Jesus bridged the immeasurable gap between heaven and earth, satisfied the Law of God, and opened the door of grace. At the cross, there is pardon and life instead of death.
