“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the LORD: look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug.” Isaiah 51:1
Some time ago, in one of those incredible Holy Spirit-led prayer sessions, I stood there in the spirit holding a rock. And I was in love. Why you ask? Well, I have a fascination of rocks and their minerals that make them up. You see, a rock is never just a rock. It comes with a story, a history, a whole tale as to why it looks the way it does, and why it is where it is.
When you look closely at a rock, it whispers the secrets of its journey. Some indicate travels through rivers, lakes, oceans, or wind. Some reveal how quickly or slowly they cooled down from being molten, and how deep in the crust they may have been. Some beauties tell you about the immense heat and pressure it experienced causing it to change shape from what it once was. The minerals that fit together to build these rocks, each have different tales and secret trace elements in their crystalline structure to change its colour or give clues about where to find precious metals and gems.
Now, why would God place a rock in my hand to look at whilst praying? As I stood there, marvelling at this little rock and thinking about all the minute details within something so plain, “boring”, and inorganic, my heart could do nothing else but praise Him. Praise Him for placing so much care and deliberate intention in something seemingly so insignificant yet incredibly precious to Him.
Then it happened. He asked me one question and I was floored, struck with revelation. He simply asked me, “Then how much care do think I put into making you?” Wow, every freckle, wrinkle, crease or cell of ours was specifically placed with care and attention. Our Father didn’t just create an entire collection of characteristics and traits then choose a random selection keeping genetics in mind when He made you. No, He designed you with utmost intention and attention to detail that I don’t think I can entirely grasp.
Today my friend, know that when we look close enough at ourselves and others, we’ll see His fingerprints. How fearfully and wonderfully are we made!
“For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, everyone of the them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with You.” Psalms 139:13-18
