The Tower of Babel and Human Rebellion

After the flood survivors multiplied very quickly, cities were built and a new world order was established. It wasn’t too long before people again went astray and started to build a huge tower which they believed would empower them to access the realms of heaven.

It was called the Tower of Babel. The builders wanted to exalt themselves and establish world control without accountability to God. (Genesis 11:39). It was the start of self-grandeur and false worship and laid the foundations for humanistic religion and values that are still entrenched in much of today’s philosophy and thinking.

In order to stop this God disrupted the building and scattered the people who then formed nations, from which all the nations of today have grown. (Genesis 10).

God’s Call to Abraham

God then proceeded with the next step of his foreordained plan, and that was to call a man who lived in the city of Ur of the Chaldeans. He was Abraham, the “Father of all who have faith”. (Genesis 12:1-3).

Once again God chose a man and a family and gave a promise to bless and protect him and, through his “seed”, bring redemption to all nations of the world. God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham in which his “seed” would bless all the families of the world. (Genesis 17:1-8, 21, Galatians 3:16-17, Hebrews 2:16-18).

Isaac and the Promise of a Saviour

This promise came through Isaac, who represented Jesus: the “seed” God promised as a sacrifice for sin. God promised a Saviour. Through an extraordinary event, in which Abraham offered Isaac as a living sacrifice, God enacted the future death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 11:17-19).

The covenant that God made with Abraham actually foretold God’s promise that he would give his own Son as an atoning sacrifice for the whole world. (John 3:16). Jesus was to bear our judgment of sin.

Grace and Forgiveness Revealed

God’s promise of grace and forgiveness was revealed in Isaac, who represented Jesus. (Galatians 3:5-18, 4:28). This covenant pointed forward to the ultimate fulfilment of God’s redemptive plan through Christ.
