Because Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, sin became universal and death followed. Ever since, every person has the awareness of a God-given conscience, an inborn knowledge of right and wrong, of good and evil no matter how elementary, which makes us morally responsible for all we do to the higher authority of God.

The Role of Conscience

All mankind lives by the restraints of this inner conscience as it directs right from wrong. It is our inner compass which convicts us when we commit a wrong deed. However, instead of listening to this God-given conscience and the conviction that it brought, mankind discarded the conviction of truth it brings and, instead of their conscience directing their thoughts and actions, it malfunctioned and mankind sank into immorality and depravity.

The Spread of Evil

In the years that followed, humanity was so inclined towards sin that their thoughts became continually evil, and violence filled the entire world. (Genesis 6:5-8). The same pattern of progress is at work today. Children are born and grow up and need to be taught right from wrong. (Genesis 18:19, Deuteronomy 4:9-10, 6:6-7). If this is done correctly, then their conscience develops into a guiding force, a compass within them to direct their lives.

If people refuse to listen to their conscience, they lose all restraint, and all manner of evil has free course with people doing terrible things without having any conviction about them. When a whole society turns away from godly morals then anarchy prevails.

The Division of Humanity

During this first age of mankind, there was a division between those who lived uprightly and those who lived wickedly. Those who obeyed God were wonderfully blessed, even living to a very advanced age (Genesis 5:3-32). Eventually, however, mankind became wicked, and only one man, Noah, was found blameless.

The Flood and God’s Judgement

God decided there was only one solution, the destruction of the wicked. When people deny their Creator and reject their moral compass they sink to the lowest of deeds. That whole age ended in world judgment with the flood sweeping the ungodly away, but God chose Noah, and his family, to safeguard the continuity of humanity. (Genesis 6: 5-13).
