The Announcement of the Kingdom

Jesus commenced his public teaching with the announcement: “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” (Mark 1:15). It was immediately apparent that the great theme of his teaching was the Kingdom of God. The Christian message is often loosely referred to as the Gospel, which actually means the “Good News.”

It is about the Kingdom of Heaven, which is a real Kingdom with a King and a throne, a vast army, many citizens, and unlimited power. Jesus said, “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.” He had a dynamic message, and this was the way he introduced it. We should repent because God is making a tremendous offer—an invitation to be part of his Kingdom.

Heaven’s Invasion of Earth

Jesus was sent from heaven with terms for that Kingdom. When Jesus came, heaven invaded earth, and when he returns, he will fully establish his Kingdom. Jesus said, “This Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached as a witness to all nations.” (Mark 13:10, Luke 24:47).

It is therefore essential that we have a clear concept of what is meant by the Kingdom of God. The Gospel of God’s Kingdom emphasises God’s sovereign right to rule over all things. It exalts and magnifies God, recognizing him as the King of the Universe and declaring his authority to rule everything, everywhere. It is our invitation to be part of it.

A Kingdom Unlike Any Other

Jesus said, “My Kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36). In other words, it was not to be confused with, compared to, or linked with anything we might know on earth. It is not a mere kingdom. God’s Kingdom is vast and universal, infinite and eternal—it includes everything, from distant galaxies to everything that exists. It will never end. (Isaiah 9:6-7).

When Jesus came to earth, he announced the arrival of this Kingdom in a way not previously known. Christ came to deliver us from the kingdom of darkness.

Two Kingdoms in Conflict

There are two kingdoms in opposition and conflict with one another. The present age is one of evil, and because of sin, darkness has engulfed the world. Christ came to break the power of sin and establish God’s rule. The King of Heaven came disguised as a common carpenter.

He conquered sin on the cross and died, rose from the dead, then ascended back to heaven and sat down on the highest throne of the universe. He reigns now and has all authority and power. However, his glory is veiled, and many people simply do not believe it.

The Reality of God’s Kingdom

Many people do not acknowledge his Lordship and even deny his existence. Yet God’s Kingdom has always existed and is a reality today. The problem is that many people deny it and are covertly, or even overtly, hostile to it. They are blinded to it.
