The universe is a “moral universe” because its creator and maintainer is a moral being, and fallen mankind is unable to attain the kind of righteousness that is required to have fellowship with him. Some people may live better lives than others, but, in some way, all break his law. (James 2:10-11).

If the pass mark for an examination is 50% and one candidate achieves 1% and another 49%, they have both failed. God’s pass mark cannot be lowered: it is 100%. All of us fall short of it. Because of the sin factor, no one can attain God’s standard despite their best efforts, intelligence, or skill. The gulf is too wide for fallen man to span. All fail.

Christ, however, came from heaven and was perfectly one with the Father and perfect in all his life. (Hebrews 9:11-15).

CHRIST IS MEDIATOR

Because of God’s loving kindness and tender mercies God himself spanned the gulf by sending his Son from heaven. Jesus came from God as “Son of God” and “Son of Man”, God in union with man, “Immanuel”, God with us.

All God’s attributes are found in Christ, yet he was truly human. He is God and man, in one person. In the New Testament, he is called the Son of God over 44 times and the Son of Man over 59 times. The fullness of God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself. (Colossians  2:9, 2 Corinthians 5:19).

Christ did what no other man could do: he never sinned. By not doing so, he lifts all who forsake their own effort and put their trust in him above the impossible barrier and into union with God. He became the immaculate mediator between God and us. (1 Timothy 2:1-6).

Because he is both God and man, he is the divine bridge. It is only through Christ that we are acceptable to God. There is no “religion” that offers such a personal substitute.

Christianity is totally unique in this respect, which sets it apart from all others and provides the only possible way to God. Christ alone is the way to heaven: he is the ladder which spans the gulf between a Holy God and lost mankind. (John 1:51, Genesis 28:12). Jesus said, “No man cometh unto the Father except by me”. (John 14:6).
